Club goal for 2010-2011: a renewed commitment to community service

 
The Elizabeth City Rotary Club has long been known for its commitment to education with its strong scholarship program and several “Student Recognition” days a year. This year the focus is intensified. Under the stewardship of Service Chair, Sharon Tanner, we’ve committed to “Rotary Reads” a new program to help young students attaining necessary reading and comprehension skills. EC Rotary member Linwood Williams identified to the club the need for one-on-one mentorship for young students and the response from the club was overwhelming. Community takes notice as EC Rotary launches Rotary Reads

 
Albemarle Health CEO and Elizabeth City Rotary Director of service Projects Sharon Tanner is launching an ambitious volunteer project to help assure area students master basic reading skills by the third grade.

Three teams of 10 volunteers each plus nine "reserves" will adopt three area elementary schools, with all volunteers committed to assisting reading specialists by tutoring students one-on-one for half an hour a week for the balance of the school year. [Read more . . .]
